{"id":247,"date":"2012-01-27T19:03:26","date_gmt":"2012-01-28T03:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/?p=247"},"modified":"2013-09-05T15:14:36","modified_gmt":"2013-09-05T22:14:36","slug":"weekend-trips-with-neighbors-vecinos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/?p=247","title":{"rendered":"Weekend Trips with Neighbors (Vecinos)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/groupShot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-265\" title=\"Sandra, Helen, Leslie, Javier and Val at the family cheese factory\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/groupShot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>We have had two terrific weekend trips these past two weeks. \u00a0Javier and Sandra invited Helen and us to visit their mountain home near Villarica, and Claudia and Marcos invited the three of us the following weekend to visit the region around their family \u00a0get-away in Conaripe. \u00a0(Click on any image to see full size picture.)<\/p>\n<p>With Javier and Sandra we saw much of the towns of Villarrica and Pucon, met their relatives and neighbors who have an extensive cheese and plant nursery business, and watched a mob of ironmen and women finishing their competition in Pucon. \u00a0Javier is very proud of his Mapuche background, and we<a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_9907.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-264\" title=\"Mapuche puppet show\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_9907-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> enjoyed a tour of the family farm which has been promoted by the Chilean government with a special\u00a0grant to encourage indigenous businesses. \u00a0We were also treated to a visit to the local Mapuche market where we ate delicious native food (bread, empanadas con queso, sopapillas, <a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_9890.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-263\" title=\"IMG_9890\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_9890-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>and matte tea repeatedly prepared by\u00a0Sandra) and viewed the fine handiwork of local craftspeople. \u00a0(Leslie fell in love with some of the expertly-carved wooden bowls in a booth manned by a charming young Mapuche.) \u00a0While we ate, a puppet show charmed many kids.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With Volcan Villarrica looming in the background, we also sampled <a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0124.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-258\" title=\"Volcan Villarrica - smoking - from Javier and Sandra's cabin\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0124-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>some of Javier&#8217;s wonderful beef which he barbecued in the yard of the family home near a burbling stream.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Click on the image below to see gallery.)<\/p>\n<p>[shashin type=&#8221;album&#8221; id=&#8221;6&#8243; size=&#8221;small&#8221; crop=&#8221;n&#8221; columns=&#8221;max&#8221; caption=&#8221;y&#8221; order=&#8221;date&#8221; position=&#8221;center&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>With Claudia and Marcos, we traveled a bit farther south to the region of the seven lakes (Region de Seite Lagos) where we went to two different biosphere reserves. \u00a0One, called Huilo-Huilo, is large and developed with entrance gates, unique architecture, shops, \u00a0trails and signs, etc. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0227.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-259\" title=\"IMG_0227\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0227-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The other, El Cani, is <a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0315.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-260\" title=\"IMG_0315\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0315-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>totally undeveloped. \u00a0The only way to visit is to walk up a very, very steep logging road to get to the huge trees that escaped the loggers when private funds, mostly<\/p>\n<p>from the US, were raised to purchase and protect the land from development. \u00a0We stayed overnight in the family summer home in Conaripe after touring the town at midnight on Saturday. \u00a0(We are now on Chilean time&#8230;.) \u00a0 Believe it or not, young kids were still up, in the market with their parents or viewing the lively local Mapuche dancers performing on the main street.<\/p>\n<p>Our serious hiking friends would be appalled to learn that we did not have many of the &#8220;10 essentials for survival&#8221; on our El Cani hike&#8230;. \u00a0We got an &#8220;early&#8221; start in driving to the initial starting point (our greeters were a large, verbal goat and a friendly pig) after an 11 a.m. breakfast and started hiking relentlessly up and up and up and up in mid-afternoon. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0430.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-261\" title=\"IMG_0430\" src=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0430-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Thanks to Claudia, we had lots of water, and Leslie had her small first aid kit. \u00a0No snacks, though, as our nuts and dried fruit were locked in the back of the truck in Leslie&#8217;s backpack. \u00a0So, up we went, discovering some bountiful cherry trees, snacking on native plants with the careful guidance of Marcos, finding the illusive Chilean woodpecker, and having some very rewarding panoramic vistas near the top of the mountain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leslieval.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/IMG_0533.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-262 alignleft\" style=\"border-style: initial;
